Grizzlies’ Agreste Signed by Padres

Gateway Grizzlies 1st Baseman Joe Agreste has been signed by the San Diego Padres.  Agreste signed with the Grizzlies after going undrafted out of West Virginia University.

Agreste had a down year as a senior at WVU, hitting .264/.376/.437, after hitting .369 with a .620 SLG as a junior.  Agreste was drafted in the 32nd round by the Mariners after his sophomore year at Potomac State before transferring to West Virginia, which makes it surprising he didn’t get his named called after a stellar junior campaign.

Agreste hit .303/.402/.537 with 33 RBI in 46 games in Gateway.  He has a good approach at the plate, takes his walks, and has some pop in his 6’4″ 190-lb. frame.  However, he is below average in the outfield and it will be a tough road to advance through the minors at 1st base without any money invested in him.  He will turn 23 in April, so I expect that Padres will give him one or two seasons to develop while holding a short leash in case they need a spot for a bigger prospect.f
