As a new Eastern League blogger to FiveToolProspects.com, my first thought was what my first blog would be about. In doing some perusing around the team websites, facebook, twitter, etc., I came across a rather amazing success orchestrated by the Bowie Baysox to do their part in the Haiti relief efforts.
A phone call to their Communications Manager, Tom Sedlacek, made it clear to me that their plan was not only a great idea, but a great success in progress. He explained that the team announced a fundraising raffle for 2 season tickets on Monday (1/18), it was picked up by some local Baltimore sports bloggers on Tuesday (1/19), and it has really taken off from there. The raffle is $10 for 2 Baysox season tickets and the money is going through the US Fund for UNICEF, ensuring 100% of all proceeds are donated to Haitian relief efforts. Amazing, they have already sold in excess of 100 tickets ($1,000) and fans are still purchasing with decent pace. The raffle will end Friday, 1/29 at 5:00, so if you live in the Baltimore area and would like a shot at season tickets, join in on the great cause while you can. Bill Rosario, who is the Assistant to the President of the Eastern League, was gracious enough to point me to a few other efforts around the league, which are also incredible ideas and should also receive accolades…
Harrisburg Senators – The Senators will be selling raffle tickets for $10 with fans having the chance to win a one-night luxury suite rental. The raffle will be held until February 10th with 100% of the proceeds going to UNICEF. Trenton Thunder – The Thunder sent a message to the fans on their e-mail newsletter list encouraging them to make a donation to UNICEF or the Red Cross.
In addition to these efforts by our clubs, there is an advertisement on the front page of the Eastern League (www.easternleague.com) which links to a story on MLB.com about the relief efforts and includes information about how fans can make a donation, including to the UNICEF website.
